“The Legend of the White Doe”
Our new Story for 2012 is “The Legend of the White Doe”. Based on the 1901 poem by Sallie Southall Cotten, the legend is about the lost colonists and their possible inclusion into the Croatoan Indian Tribe on Hatteras Island after their disappearance from their settlement. It explores the Indian folk lore of the first English child to be born in the new world, Virginia Dare, and her fate as part of the Coatoan tribe.
